Fatal crash closes Highway 550 south of Durango

Four vehicles involved near Bondad

First responders responded to a four-vehicle crash with serious injuries near Bondad just after 6 p.m. Friday.

“There is one confirmed fatality,” said Capt. Adrian Driscoll of the Colorado State Patrol. “Four people were transported (to the hospital).”

Law enforcement closed U.S. Highway 550 to deal with the crash.

At 8 p.m., Driscoll said the road would be closed for at least another 45 minutes.

“We’re still trying to sort it out,” he said. “Wreckers are en route, and we’ll get it cleaned up as soon as possible.”

According to the scanner, none of the four vehicles involved in the crash was drivable.

Traffic was diverted to La Posta Road (County Road 213) and County Road 318 during the almost three-hour closure.

The accident occurred about four miles north of the Colorado-New Mexico border near the bridge crossing the Animas River, Driscoll said.
