The U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General is investigating the theft of mail earlier this year at the Bayfield Post office.

One Bayfield resident said she mailed two graduation cards with cash this May, and another with a gift card inside, and none of the recipients received the cash or gift card.

Several thefts were reported this spring, said postal employees in Bayfield.

During the investigation, a former Postal Service contract cleaner was identified as a person of interest and was interviewed by USPS OIG special agents.

"The USPS OIG considers the allegation of theft of any U.S. Mail by any Postal Service employee to be a very serious issue," wrote David Masters, an assistant special agent in the office of investigations for the postal service. "When such allegations are made, the USPS OIG vigorously investigates those allegations, as we did in this instance."

No arrests have been made, said David Rupert, a spokesman with the U.S. Postal Service in Denver.

He said he cannot release any more information because of the review by federal prosecutors.

In 2013, the Office of the Inspector General completed 3,836 investigations, resulting in 1,007 arrests and indictments and 617 convictions, according to the OIG website.
