Feeling negative? Think of John McCain

Over the past couple of months, the Opinion page has been publishing the rants, rages and attacks by a particular Bayfield resident.

This gentleman seems to believe that broad-based negative labels and attacks are a productive manner in which to effect change in La Plata County and Durango.

Promoting an us-versus-them mentality, and painting all sides in disputes with partisan and divisive language, will not bring changes for a better community.

We face a myriad of challenges in our community, some are unique to the area, some are not.

I would remind the gentleman that all of our democratic institutions require not just our votes and our opinions but far more to be successful.

The late Senator John McCain sums up my feelings and I hope that they will resonate with our citizens:

“Civic participation over a lifetime, working in neighborhoods and communities and service of all kinds – military and civilian, full-time and part-time and internationally – will strengthen America’s civic purpose.”
