The local community is responsible for making our 11th film festival so successful! In addition to cash support from local sponsors, donors and grantors, business sponsors supplement our budget by contributing in-kind support and services. Volunteer staff members work year-round, and the ranks of volunteers swell to over 100 during festival week. Enthusiastic audiences fill the theaters. There would be no film festival without all of you. Thank you.
With growth comes the challenge common among film festivals, which is not being able to seat all pass holders in all film programs. Though we work carefully on the schedule, limited seating capacity in Durango’s DCP (digital cinema package) compatible theaters is a reality. This year, there were only two sell-outs at the Animas City Theatre.
We regret having to turn audience members away, as happened on Sunday March 6. (Letters, Herald, March 17.) Entry to the second screening of “The Rider And The Wolf” was delayed by a technical issue; in the meantime, first-tier pass holders filled up their queue and then filled up the theater. Our agreement with the filmmaker allowed us to show his film only twice.
Making the festival affordable has always been a priority for us. Though pass sales covered only 25 percent of our budget this year, we are reluctant to raise the price of our passes. They go on sale at reduced, early bird prices about eight months before the festival. Second tier punch passes can be shared. Opening Night films are free to the public, along with the panels and several events. We reach out to local students with free educational films and in-person filmmaker presentations.
Our audiences can choose from 100 independent films of all genres in five days of film programs, all with the opportunity to connect with filmmakers and other film buffs. We appreciate very much the letter writers’ comments about the importance of independent film and the arts for Durango. That belief is the source of the energy and commitment we bring to our film festival.
