Few birdies for Fort Lewis golf teams

Improvement hits a speed bump

The improved play of the Fort Lewis College golf teams took a step back this week.

Competing in the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament of the year, the FLC men finished ninth out of 10 teams on the par-71 Ravenna Golf Course in Littleton. The women played in the second RMAC tournament of their season and finished last out of 20 teams on the par-72 Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Arizona.

Matt Huntley led the men’s team with a tie for 18th place. He shot rounds of 76, 75 and 79 to finish 17-over-par. Michael Thomas tied for 26th at 20-over, Eric Neal was 45th at 33-over, and Skyler Bordeaux and Reed Hodgson both shot 50-over to tie for 56th in the 59-player field.

Colorado School of Mines won the tournament with a team total 30-over. Tim Amundson led the Orediggers at 5-over to finish in second place. UC-Colorado Springs’ Colin Prater won the tournament at 12-under.

The FLC women were once again led by freshman Summer Vigil, who tied for 27th after consecutive rounds of 76 to put her at 8-over. There was a big gap between Vigil and the next Skyhawk Isabella Martinez, who had a big improvement from Monday to Tuesday. After shooting 92 to open, she fired a 78 to move into a tie for 86th. Still, she finished 26-over after the tough start. Shelby Hindes tied for 100th with rounds of 96 and 84, Lindsey Blythe shot 94 and 95 to place 105th, and Michelle Roth was 106th after shooting 110 and 99. Playing as individuals, Judith Camacho and Summer Tsosie also competed for FLC. Camacho finished 99th after rounds of 90 and 93, and Tsosie was 104th after rounds of 93 and 94.

Tarleton State won the tournament with a team score of 599, led by a tie for third place from Lydia Traylor, who shot even par. The tournament was won by Laura Scrivner of California Baptist, who finished 3-under.

The FLC women will have a few weeks to prepare for its next event Oct. 10-11. The men will visit the Golf Club at Estrella in Arizona next week.
