Fiesta Days are here again

82nd annual event celebrates Western heritage

Durango’s annual Fiesta Days has begun, and there is the usual slate of events through this weekend. Fiesta Days began in 1935 to celebrate the area’s cultural and cowboy heritage. It has undergone many changes in its 81-year history, but the rodeos and parade have always been a part of it. Here’s a lineup of this year’s events:

July 26, 4-8 p.m.: 4D Barrel Jackpot; enter at 4 p.m., Time onlys at 4:30 p.m. (limit 100) juniors after, open to follow. Sponsored by Fiesta Royalty and Royalty Contestants; $25 entry fee for juniors, $40 entry fee for open.

July 27, 8-10 a.m.: Vendor setup. Vendors will be open by 10 a.m.

July 27, 8 a.m.: Team Roping Slack; mixed TR, open TR to follow. Third Annual Phil Brevik/Melvin Haga Memorial Jackpot to follow. Enter at 11 a.m. at Rodeo Office trailer, 13 Slide pick 1/draw 1 or pick 2, enter 3 times $200/man.

July 27, 6 p.m.: Barbecue, pie auction and street dance. Music by Wild Country. Sponsored by Basin Rodeo Team.

July 28, 9 a.m.: Slack.

July 28, 7 p.m.: First rodeo performance saluting all of our first-responders.

July 29, 8:30 a.m.: Parade staging at Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot.

July 29, 10 a.m.: 82nd annual Parade, from College Drive to 11 Street alone Main Avenue.

July 29: 1 p.m.: Military appreciation second rodeo performance

July 29, 5:30 p.m.: Chuck Wagon cook off and barbecue. Cooking starts at 8 a.m. in shade of trees south of La Plata County Fairgrounds. Sponsored by La Plata Cattleman’s Association and Cow Belles.

July 29, 6 p.m.: 2017 Queen coronation.

July 29, 7 p.m.: Breast cancer awareness third rodeo performance.

July 30, 9 a.m.: Cowboy Church, La Plata County Fairgrounds grandstands.

July 30, 9 a.m.: Pancake breakfast, at Patio, 85 Goddard Ave, Ignacio. Sponsored by Ignacio FFA.

July 30: 1 p.m.: Championship fourth rodeo performance.
