Fiesta Days to celebrate Western culture, heritage

Weekend to feature rodeos, parade

Durango’s annual Fiesta Days has begun and features events through the weekend.

Fiesta Days began in 1935 to celebrate the area’s cultural and cowboy heritage. It has undergone many changes in its 82-year history, but the rodeos and parade have always been a part of it.

Here’s a lineup of this year’s events, which will be held at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave., unless otherwise noted:

Friday, 9 a.m.: Slack roping.

Friday, 7 p.m.: First rodeo, with salute to first responders.

Saturday, 8:30 A.M.: Parade staging at Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Depot, 479 Main Ave.

Saturday, 10 a.m.: 82nd annual parade, from College Drive to 11th Street along Main Avenue.

Saturday, 1 P.M.: Second rodeo, with military appreciation.

Saturday, 5:30 P.M.: Chuck Wagon Cook-off and Barbecue. Cooking starts at 8 a.m. in shade of trees south of La Plata County Fairgrounds. Sponsored by La Plata Cattleman’s Association and Cow Belles.

Saturday, 6 p.m.: 2017 Queen coronation.

Saturday, 7 p.m.: Third rodeo, with breast cancer awareness presentation.

Sunday, 9 a.m.: Cowboy Church at fairgrounds grandstands.

Sunday, 9 a.m.: Pancake breakfast at Patio restaurant, 85 Goddard Ave., Ignacio. Sponsored by Ignacio FFA.

Sunday, 1 P.M.: Fourth rodeo, with championship event.
