Fifth grade YAFL defeats Farmington

It was a rough week for the Bayfield-Ignacio Young American Football League teams, but there was one bright spot.

With strong blocking by the offensive line and outstanding defensive work, the Bayfield fifth grade YAFL team scored a big win over the Farmington Oilers on Saturday, Sept. 4, ending a two-game losing streak.

The team's two quarterbacks, Deegan Barnes and Lance Mazur, both ran in two touchdowns each, resulting in a 27-6 win. Mitchell Story also rang a long carry to move the ball up the field for the Wolverines.

During a tackle, Caden Wood stripped the ball from a Farmington player in one of the outstanding defensive plays of the game. Alaysia Kremer, Teagan Taylor, Nate Hendren and Daniel Schneider also put in strong defensive showings. Fourth grade is now 2-2 for the season. Unfortunately, their win was the only win for this week's Bayfield-Ignacio YAFL teams.

Sixth grade lost 39-0 to the Farmington Panthers.

Fourth grade had a tough loss Saturday 26-0 against the Cortez Titans.

Third grade lost 24-0 to the Farmington Scorpions.

Second grade YAFL had a bye game this week.

All of the Wolverine teams hit the road Sept. 12 for their games. The final home games of the season are on Saturday, Sept. 19.
