PUEBLO – No. 5 CSU-Pueblo continued its hot streak to start the season, scoring 38 unanswered points to open the game before topping Western New Mexico 44-7 on Saturday.
A balanced attack gave the ThunderWolves (3-0, 1-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) 283 yards passing and 270 yards rushing, and five different players scored touchdowns for CSU-Pueblo, led by a pair from Chris Ashe. Chris Bonner threw for 256 yards and a pair of scores, including one to Paul Browning, who had 121 yards receiving for CSU-Pueblo.
The Mustangs (0-2, 0-1 RMAC) ran for just 47 net yards. Quarterback Mitch Glassman was 24-of-47 for 160 yards and a touchdown.
Colorado Mines 62, Black Hills State 22
SPEARFISH, S.D. – Colorado Mines improved to 2-1 and 1-0 in the RMAC with a big offensive performance against Black Hills State.
The Orediggers topped the 60-point mark for the second time this season. Colorado Mines scored 72 points in its season opener against South Dakota Mines.
The Yellow Jackets fell to 0-3 and 0-1 in the RMAC.
No. 20 Chadron State 30, Colorado Mesa 24
CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State rallied from a 21-10 third-quarter deficit to top the Colorado Mesa Mavericks.
The No. 20 Eagles (2-1, 1-0 RMAC) scored the only touchdown of the fourth quarter, breaking a 24-all tie on Jonn McLain’s 38-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Ross with 12 minutes, 37 seconds remaining.
Chadron State had trailed by as many as 15 points earlier in the game before rallying behind 139 rushing yards from Glen Clinton and three touchdown passes from McLain, who also was picked off three times. Chapman Ham added a touchdown catch, and Ross had an 8-yard touchdown reception to go with his game winner.
Jake Cimolino ran for 146 yards and a touchdown for the Mavericks (1-2, 0-1 RMAC). Eli Williams hit a quartet of field goals for Colorado Mesa, connecting from 22, 22, 25 and 32 yards.
Adams State 16, Western State 14
ALAMOSA – Michael Carl’s 2-yard touchdown run with 5 minutes, 48 seconds to go lifted the Grizzlies past Western State.
The ground games were in full display for both teams. Austin Ekeler led the Mountaineers (0-3, 0-1 RMAC) with 172 of their 185 rushing yards, and he ran for a touchdown.
Cameron Dechesa carried for 69 yards to lead Adams State (3-0, 1-0 RMAC).
Connor Stevens had a fumble recovery for a score, and Logan Beck hit a 45-yard field goal for the Grizzlies. Brett Arrivey’s 11-yard touchdown pass to TJ Dennis accounted for WSC’s other score.
