Fight to keep Peters behind bars

The request from Tina Peters’ lawyers – asking for leniency or intervention in her sentence – is patently absurd, both on the face of it and under the Rule of Law, the latter of which has been endlessly and shamelessly ignored and violated by Trump and his sycophants for decades (Herald, Dec. 26). The fact that the SCOTUS six (agents of the right-wing Federalist Society) have gone out of their way to empower Trump’s imperial presidency has proven the existence of the cabal of libertarian purists from The Heritage Foundation – the mother ship of Project 2025.

It was terrifyingly revolting when Trump pardoned just over 1,500 convicted, violent rioters who invaded the Capitol building for one purpose: to fulfill Trump’s demands to criminally overturn a lawful 2020 election. Lately, he has been pardoning other enablers of his coup. What seems to be keeping justice alive in the Peters case is that she was convicted in a Colorado state court, not a federal court. Trump cannot demand a pardon on a state conviction.

Thus, given Peters’ conviction for allowing interlopers from Trump’s coup attempt to access voting machines to alter election results in her district, Gov. Polis must fight hammer and tong to keep her in prison to serve the sentence she so well deserves.
