Going to the movies on a Friday night is always a good way to kick off the weekend. And when those movies are being screened as a way to help those in our community, that night out becomes even better.
Friday night at Animas City Theatre, Durango Independent Film Festival will be screening Best of the Fest, featuring 10 short films that were in the 2018 film festival. The screening is a benefit for the Community Emergency Relief Fund, which is managed by the Community Foundation Serving Southwest Colorado, and is helping those affected by the 416 Fire.
“With the fire and everybody affected, we just felt like we could do our part in raising funds for it,” said Joanie Leonard, executive director of the film festival. “That’s all it really came to – just the need in the community. The fire affects so many people; it puts people out of work.”
While the screening is free, cash and check donations will be accepted at the door to benefit CERF. Animas City Theatre donated the venue for the event, Leonard said.
“It’s a fun, uplifting, funny, thoughtful, heartfelt program,” Leonard said, adding that the screening will include films from the film festival’s various shorts programs, including family and Native American films. “It’s a good little sampling of films.”
Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the program will start at 6:30. Festival merchandise will also be available for sale, with proceeds also being donated.
“We just want to do our part. Let’s help each other out,” Leonard said.
