A mobile home received significant damage Sunday night in a fire that broke out northeast of Durango, according to Durango Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Karola Hanks.
Fire crews received a report of smoke about 5:30 p.m. near county roads 228 and 225, about 12 miles northeast of Durango, off U.S. Highway 160.
Durango Fire arrived on scene to find a double-wide mobile home on fire. Crews were assisted by the Los Pinos Fire Protection District and the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District.
In all, it took four fire engines, two medic units and six tankers to fight the blaze. Crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to another, adjacent mobile home, but the double-wide experienced a fair amount of damage.
“I’m not clear yet whether it’s a total loss, but it probably is,” Hanks said.
Hanks said crews left the scene around 9:30 p.m.
It was unclear Monday morning what started the fire. Hanks said investigators will be out Monday looking for a cause.
“There’s a huge number of options,” she said. “We go into every fire investigation with an open mind. … We’ll just have to wait and see.”
Hanks said a family lived in the mobile home. They were not home at the time of the fire, and had spent the night with friends.
“There were no injuries, and all the pets were safe,” Hanks said.
The mobile home was located in the 2300 block of County Road 228, which has several homes on it. According to county records, the property owners are Jesse and Anita Lopez. A call Monday morning seeking comment was not immediately returned.
