Fire burns grassland Saturday near Elmore’s Corner

Durango Fire Protection District warns of high fire danger, drought conditions persist
A small fire burned about an acre of grassland southeast of Elmore’s Corner on Saturday. Firefighters had the blaze contained within 30 minutes.

A fire on Saturday burned about an acre of grassland southeast of Elmore’s Corner, drawing more than a dozen firefighters who contained the fire within 30 minutes, according to Durango Fire Protection District.

Firefighters responded to a property on Pioneer Circle near County Road 222 at 12:26 p.m. for a report of a brush fire, said Deputy Chief Randy Black. Within 10 minutes, emergency crews upgrade the response to a structure fire.

Three engines, one brush truck and three tankers brought at least 17 firefighters to the property, Black said. The fire was contained by 1 p.m.

Dry conditions have led to dangerous fire conditions in La Plata County, said Randy Black, deputy fire chief with the Durango Fire Protection District. Even muddy areas are susceptible to burning, he said.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation – Black said he does not suspect a controlled burn got out of control.

“It’s dry,” Black said. “Grasses are dry, even with the mud, grasses are burning above it.”

The U.S. Drought monitor recorded moderate and sever drought conditions in La Plata County as of the end of February. Black urged residents to exercise caution with any burning or burned material.
