Fire damages home

Fire seriously damaged a home near the intersection of Forest Avenue and Mountview Parkway early Monday morning.

The fire started about 3 a.m. and was under control less than half an hour later, said Rod Allen a battalion chief with Durango Fire Protection District.

“The house was heavily damaged by fire and smoke,” Allen said.

Three engines and 14 first responders went to the scene.

The fire was fully extinguished about 5:15 a.m., and firefighters began investigating around that time.

About 25 percent of the house was severely damaged by flames, and the entire house was damaged by fire and smoke.

Chris Caldwell and his family, including two dogs and a cat, all safely evacuated before firefighters arrived.

The family has been displaced, and the Red Cross is assisting them with housing, Allen said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but an electric blanket could be at fault, he said.
