Upper Pine River Fire Protection district has released its annual report for 2017.
Highlights include an improved Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating and a balanced budget of $4.2 million in revenues and expenditures.
The report also profiled the department's former chaplain, Jim Chapman, who died in December.
Two major successes for the department this year included a cardiac patient who was found unresponsive in his home, and firefighter and EMT Tom Barnes was able to revive him, and he recovered. Another rescue happened on Sept. 9 in Transfer Park above Lemon Reservoir, when a climber fell more than 100 feet. A wilderness fire responder helped prevent what could have been a fatal airway injury, and Upper Pine and La Plata County Search and Rescue retrieved the patient, crossing a river to get him to a Flight for Life helicopter. The patient is recovering in Denver.
