Fire destroys mobile home east of Durango

Two cats killed in blaze

Firefighters responded to a fully involved mobile home fire Friday morning at the Narrow Gauge Mobile Home Park east of Durango.

When firefighters arrived, the double-wide trailer had flames shooting out of the roof.

The fire was reported at 8:21 a.m. at 34344 U.S. Highway 160, east of Elmore’s Corner.

Firefighters made entry into the home about 8:50 a.m. to search for victims, but no victims were found. A firefighter suffered a minor injury to the face after being hit by a hydrant wrench, said Bruce Evans, chief of the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District.

Two cats died in the blaze, he said.

The home was occupied by two people. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“It’s a real miracle on most of these things ... that they don’t catch neighbors’ trailers or mobile homes on fire,” Evans said.

The La Plata Archuleta Water District installed a fire hydrant about a month ago outside the mobile home park, which allowed firefighters to spray a large quantity of water in a short amount of time, Evans said.

In addition to Upper Pine, Durango Fire Protection District and Los Pinos Fire Protection District responded. About 22 firefighters were on scene.
