Fire near Pagosa Springs contained to 20 acres

Firefighters used old logging roads and nearby trails to contain a small, lightning-started blaze in the Pagosa Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest.

Cam Hooley, spokeswoman for the San Juan National Forest, said in a news release the blaze was contained to 20 acres Friday afternoon, and crews will continue to work the blaze – cooling down remaining hot spots.

The fire was triggered by lightning Thursday evening on Flat Iron Mesa, about 3 miles north of Chris Mountain, northwest of Pagosa Springs.

Hooley said smoke may be visible from U.S. Highway 160 west of Pagosa Springs.

The fire is burning in mixed conifer forest with heavy logging slash and dense fuels.
