Fire north of Durango now 95% contained

Blaze broke out Thursday afternoon near Shalona Lake

Firefighters were able to quickly contain nearly all of a small fire that broke out Thursday north of Durango.

U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Esther Godson said Friday that the 505 Fire was kept to a quarter-acre burn area and was 95% contained. The cause was determined to be a lightning strike.

After the fire was reported Thursday afternoon, an aggressive attack was initiated, with several aircraft and a hand crew of about 20 responding to the blaze east of Shalona Lake, about 16 miles north of Durango, near Bear Creek.

Firefighting efforts continued through the night Thursday, and crews planned to mop-up hot spots throughout the day Friday. Smoke may still be visible, especially along U.S. Highway 550.

Near Dolores, fire crews also have the Loading Pen Fire, which burned 42 acres, at 95% containment, Godson said. A 10-person crew remains on scene, but little smoke or heat was expected Friday.

More than 240 firefighters are working the Sand Creek Fire, about 20 miles west of Pagosa Springs. There, the blaze has consumed about 71 acres and had zero containment, according to federal data.
