An abundance of monsoonal moisture has significantly reduced the fire danger in Southwest Colorado, allowing public land agencies to lift fire restrictions.
The San Juan National Forest lifted fire restrictions Monday, and La Plata County government is expected to do the same Tuesday.
The San Juan National Forest implemented Stage 1 fire restrictions on July 1 for lands south of U.S. Highway 160.
Regardless of fire restrictions, forest officials urge visitors to use caution with fire in the backcountry by following these tips:
Put out campfires completely every time you leave camp. Pour water on the ashes and stir until there is no smoke, and ashes are cool to the touch. Consider using a camp stove instead.Dispose of cigarette butts in a safe and appropriate container.Make sure chain saws have working spark arresters, and carry water, a shovel, and fire extinguisher when cutting firewood.Park vehicles in areas clear of vegetation, not over dry grasses.
