Fire scorches 60 acres, forces evacuations near Breckenridge

BRECKENRIDGE – A wildfire has scorched about 60 acres and forced residents from their homes near the Colorado mountain town of Breckenridge.

The fire was reported midday Wednesday and is burning beetle-killed trees in the White River National Forest. Eight firefighters with the United States Forest Service parachuted in, and two heavy tankers and a helicopter have been dropping slurry and water on the fire.

The Red, White & Blue Fire Protection District says homes on Peak 7 have been evacuated, and residents in the area of Gold Hill have been warned that they might have to leave.

The Summit Daily reported Wednesday afternoon that visible flames have tapered off, but heavy smoke was billowing from the fire and moving toward Frisco.
