The Forest Service is expanding the burn area of the 842 Fire in the HD Mountains southeast of Bayfield to improve forest health.

Although thunderstorms moved through the area on Saturday, the 842 Fire received almost no precipitation and dry weather conditions allowed fire crews to burn 111 acres in the HD Mountains near Chimney Rock National Monument, which brought the fire to a total of 634 acres burned. The total burn area did not increase on Sunday.

Firefighters will remain on site throughout Monday to monitor and patrol previously burned areas to the northwest, and scout the southwestern areas planned for upcoming burns.

After the areas are surveyed, crews will develop strategies and preparation work will begin.

“We’re doing everything we can today to set ourselves up for success tomorrow,” Jerran Flinders, Type III Incident Commander, said in a press release.

Unburned interior islands will continue to produce smoke and may be visible from Colorado Highway 151 and U.S. Highway 160 near the HD Mountains and Chimney Rock; however, this smoke should be light and well-dispersed.

No travel or camping restrictions are in place, though visitors should be aware that fire activity could increase at any time.

The fire was initially ignited by a lightning strike last week.
