Firefighters were battled a small wildfire Friday afternoon north of Durango along U.S. Highway in the Shalona Hill area.

The fire was reported about 3:30 p.m. and had burned about 1 acre as of 4 p.m., said Randy Black, chief of the Durango Fire Protection District.

“It doesn’t sound like it’s doing a whole lot right now,” he said.

Firefighters had ordered a helicopter to assist in extinguishing the blaze, but they later canceled it saying they had a line around the fire and no longer needed the aircraft.

Efforts to learn more about the fire, including the cause, were unsuccessful Friday night.
