First day of Snowdown went off without a hitch

The first day of Snowdown kicked off with a slew of events, including the classic Fashion Do’s and Don’ts, which drew hundreds, and Air Guitar Hero, a new event this year.

7:44 p.m.: It’s like quarters, but a bit different. Eleven teams of three to five clenched a quarter between their buttocks at the Brew Pub and Kitchen as they tried to drop the change into a wooden box with a plastic cup. If they made it in the box, one point. In the cup was three. The final round was an individual “Simon Says” game where competitors not only had to perform tasks, but had to hold a quarter between their buttocks while doing it. Leanne Walker won the Golden Ass trophy, winning her team, the Super Squeezers, a third consecutive title.

5:14 p.m.: Dozens of Durangoans packed into The Roost to determine who in Durango has the best air guitar. Ten participants jammed to classic and New Age rock songs while a crowd of about 40 shouted and clapped along. The Purple People Eater danced to her theme song. Contestants were judged on their performance, technicality and costume. Jordan Smith got first place, Dan Korman got second and Jason Baruch got third. “Penny Gadget” got worst, Jack Peterson got second worst.

1:43 p.m.: More than 200 people packed into the exhibit hall at the La Plata County Fairgrounds for the 23rd annual Snowdown Do’s and Don’ts Fashion Show. Appearances included Wonder Bread Woman, the Space Force, the 469 Train and even Stan Lee himself.

People in attendance dressed to the nines — some spent hours on their costumes for this year’s theme, Get Your ComicOn.
