The two-day Southwestern League Championships finished Saturday with the Durango High School girls in first, the boys in second and the Demons’ top-ranked 800-meter runner holding a new school record.
The Durango girls won an SWL title in Grand Junction with 160 points, leading second-place Fruita Monument’s 139.
The DHS boys took second with 105 points, behind Grand Junction’s 191.
Joe Maloney, the Demons’ distance ace and USA elite first-team runner, set a new DHS record by running the two-lap race in 1 minute, 54.8 seconds Friday.
Saturday, his sister Shannon Maloney led a 400 group that went 2-3-4. Maloney was second in 59.3 seconds, Hannah Hwang was third in 1:00.29, and Dominique Ward was fourth in 1:01.79.
Hwang also took part in the 4x200-meter relay team that took first, pushing Natalie Neve, Mackenzie Sill and Miranda Gallegos to a 1:46.95 finish.
The girls 4x800 relay took top honors, too, as Madeigh Winsor, Katerina Seibert, Amy Gallemore and Emily Fogel won in 10:22.97, and the 800 sprint medley team of Mckenzie Marciante, Gallegos, Sill and Hwang won in 1:53.39.
Relay success continued in the girls 4x400: Marley Weaver-Gabel, Shanelle Bogus, Katerina Seibert and Neve finished second in 4:13.27.
The boys 4x400 version of David Moening, Shane Bisogno, Devin Lewis and Joe Maloney improved on that result and took first place in 3:25.92.
Bisogno also took second in the open 100-meter dash.
In the field events Saturday, McKenna Franzen won the shot put for Durango with a 37-foot throw, and Gabi Razma, who took second Friday in the long jump, took third in the triple jump by hopping 34-11.5.
The CHSAA Class 4A Track and Field State Championships will feature the top 18 athletes in each event, including plenty from DHS.
The state track and field meet will start Thursday in Denver.
