In the summertime, it’s not unusual to see the Animas River full of rafters, kayakers and tubers. But in the wintertime, it’s generally left to the occasional polar bear plunge or diehard fisherman.
Unless you’re Jennifer Murphy.
“In 2009, I had tubed on a river in Vermont,” Murphy said, “and last year I tried to get people to join me, but I started too late. This year, I told people I wanted to go for my birthday, which was Tuesday, and they agreed to join me.”
On Sunday, Murphy, along with friends Cherie Gibson and Thera Smith, donned dry suits and took to the shallow waterway.
“We stayed toasty warm,” Murphy said, “and used the fat black inflatable tubes, so we never had to get out and walk. I think we can safely say we were the first to tube in 2015.”
