On Monday, the U.S. flag will be lowered to half-staff in honor of a major general who passed away earlier this month.
Gov. John Hickenlooper announced Friday all public buildings in the state of Colorado will lower the flag from sunrise to sunset in memory of Maj. Gen. John L. France.
According to a media release, France joined the U.S. Air Force in November 1952 to fight in the Korean War. He graduated from Webb Air Force Base in Texas three years later as a second lieutenant with pilot wings, and went to Misawa Air Base in Japan to fly F-86F Sabre Jets.
After his service in the Korean War, France joined the Colorado Air National Guard, flying air shows for the “Minute Men” demonstration team throughout the 1950s. In October 1961, France was mobilized for the crisis in Berlin, and was again mobilized for 239 combat missions in Vietnam. Upon his return, France was selected as commander for several tactical groups, as well as the Colorado Air National Guard. In June 1982, France was promoted to major general, the release said.
France is survived by his wife, Carole, and his daughters, Allison and Amie. Military funeral honors and interment will take place at 11 a.m. Oct. 26 at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Shelter A.
