As the mud settled and the muscles eased, the Fort Lewis Skyhawks stood alone at the podium in the Team Omnium and Team Relay to capture its 22nd national title over the weekend at the USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships in Snowshoe, West Virginia.

The Skyhawks scored 741 points to take the Team Omnium with Brevard College taking second place with 711 points. Marian University took third with 696 points.

Fort Lewis also took the Team Relay with a time of 15 minutes, 52.9 seconds. Marian University took second place with 16:02.4 while Brevard College took third with 16:04.1.

Along with the 22nd national title in school history, this marks the 10th mountain bike title in the last 11 years for Fort Lewis after losing in 2014 to the University of Colorado-Boulder.

In the Women’s Individual Omnium, Durango local Sofia Gomez Villafañe bested the field and took her second consecutive championship in the discipline by taking first with 367 points. Sarah Hill of Brevard College took second with 278 points and Angelina Palermo of Marian University took third with 242 points. Libbey Endersbe of Fort Lewis took sixth with 212 points.

On the men’s side of the Individual Omnium, Luke Vrounwnvelder of the University of North Carolina took first with 339 points. Fort Lewis rider Stephan Devoust was the top rider for the Skyhawks by taking third with 284 points while teammate Michael Sampson took 10th with 100 points.

In the Men’s Dual Slalom, Zach Graveson took the top spot for Fort Lewis with 372.24 points. Teammate Brian White, of Durango, came in ninth for Fort Lewis with 402.63 while Devoust took 15th with 425.73 points. Durango local Derrik Blackmore who rides for Colorado Mesa University came in 16th with 429.55 points. Fort Lewis rider Joseph Crosby took 29th with 479.21. Sampson who finished with in 37th with 509.77 points.

On the women’s side of the Dual Slalom, Fort Lewis rider Leila Carrillo took 10th overall with 463.96 points. Endersbe took 16th with 503.77 points, and Rebecca Gardner took 20th with 530.30. Gomez Villafañe took 21st with 536.93 points.
