FLC cycling 4th after Day 1

Skyhawks finish third in the men’s time trial at road nationals

A solid start Day 1 has Fort Lewis College still in the running for that elusive road crown.

The Skyhawks, who have 18 national championships but nary a road championship, sit fourth in the Division I team omnium standings after the first day of the Collegiate Road Nationals on Friday in Ogden, Utah.

Friday was time-trial day, and after the racing was over, FLC was fourth overall with 116 team points.

Marian leads with 188 points, while Lindenwood is second at 139 and Stanford third at 137.

The Skyhawks picked up the weekend’s first podium finish in the men’s team time trial. FLC finished third, about 37 seconds behind champion Marian. FLC finished in 42 minutes, 43.98 seconds, with Lindenwood in second in 42:21.08.

The FLC women’s team came in seventh in its race, finishing in 52 minutes, 14.95 seconds. Marian took home the crown in that race, as well, finishing in 48:46.76.

Trevor Brooks tried his luck in the men’s individual time trial, and the Austin, Texas, native placed 26th, capping his ride in 31 minutes, 46.10 seconds.

Saturday’s schedule calls for criterium racing for both the men’s and women’s teams, with the event wrapping Sunday with the signature road race.
