Performance takes place Sunday at Fort Lewis College

Flutist Rochelle Mann will add something special to the annual Fort Lewis College Faculty Showcase on Sunday. Professor emerita and former chair of the music department, Mann carries with her the long and colorful musical history at the college.

In addition to making a short presentation about Roshong Recital Hall and the musician for whom it is named, she will remind us of its dedication on Sept. 10, 1995. She will follow her introduction with a performance of “Kokopelli,” written in 1990 by the late American composer Katherine Hoover.

The remainder of the program will be filled by current faculty members with one new addition: Eun Ah Roh. She replaces Hannah Duff, who left FLC at the end of last year to pursue her doctorate in Cincinnati.

Overall, works range widely from a number of European composers, some of which may be new to music lovers, to new pieces. As per tradition, the program will end energetically with jazz – thanks to FLC stalwarts saxophonist Jeff Solon and pianist Jack Maynes.

Pianist Holly Quist will perform a Chaconne by Sofia Gubaidulina and collaborate with violinist Richard Silvers in the dazzling and virtuosic “Dance of the Goblins,” from Antonio Bazzini’s “Scherzo Fantastique, Op. 25.” Cellist Katherine Jetter will perform with Maynes on guitar for two movements from “Pot-pourri” by Justus Johann Dodtzaur. Percussionist John O’Neal will offer one of his favorite contemporary works, “Caméléon,” by Eric Sammut.

Soprano Roh, the new faculty member for voice and choirs, will perform “The Doll Song,” from Jacques Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffmann” with Quist on piano. Roh is a lyric coloratura with a Doctor of Musical Arts from Catholic University. Expect musical fireworks as the Offenbach showpiece will test the brilliant acoustics of our fine recital hall.

Quist and Maynes will also collaborate with colleagues in two very different works. Department Chair Justin Hubbard will perform on saxophone with Quist for “Tableaux de Provence,” by Paule Maurice. Pianist Maynes will collaborate with Joe Nibley on trumpet for two works, “Romanza,” by Rafael Mendez and Harry James’ famous Concerto from 1942.

The FLC Faculty Showcase launches the musical season at the college and is well worth a trip to the campus. As in years past, works will be introduced and a tasty reception will follow so you can thank the music faculty members for their performances and what they contribute to the musical life of our community.
