FLC roundup: Gaumont sets more records for Skyhawks track

Fort Lewis College sophomore Zachary Gaumont continues to rewrite the Skyhawks’ track and field record books. Gaumont established new outdoor track and field school records in the 100-meter and 200 events at the Chuck Hearing Invitational on Friday in Pueblo.

Gaumont won the men’s 100 in 10.42 seconds and finished second in the men’s 200 in 21.41. He previously broke the school record in the 60 and 200 during the indoor track and field season.

Behind Gaumont in the 100 and 200 was fellow Skyhawks football player freshman Orlando Guevara. He finished fourth in the 200 in 21.53 and ninth in the 100 in 10.94.

The Skyhawks men had a good showing in the men’s 800, with freshman Payton Whitehead finishing seventh in 1:52.77 and freshman Brody Hubbard finishing eighth in 1:53.99. Graduate student Aaron Busche finished 10th in the men’s 800 in 1:54.17.

On the women’s side, freshman Addisyn Leeds finished fifth in the women’s 100 in 12.26. Junior Marisol Castilleja finished ninth in the women’s 1,500 in 5:03.11.

The men’s and women’s track and field teams head to the Maverick Invitational on Thursday and Friday in Grand Junction at Colorado Mesa University.

Softball splits series at New Mexico Highlands

FLC’s softball team has been playing better lately and its stronger play traveled to New Mexico Highlands for a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday. The Skyhawks went 2-2 against the Cowgirls.

The Skyhawks moved to 8-24 overall and 7-20 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after that series. New Mexico Highlands moved to 10-29 overall and 4-25 in the RMAC.

On Saturday, the teams started out the series with a close game, with the Cowgirls victorious 2-1. The Skyhawks led 1-0 after two innings, but NMH scored a run in the third and sixth to come out on top.

Redshirt freshman Makenna Milliman, freshman Alyssa Fockler and sophomore Natalie Rodman each had two hits for the Skyhawks. Senior Amiee Shanks pitched all six innings for FLC, allowing seven hits, two runs and throwing a strikeout.

The Skyhawks bounced back in a big way to end Saturday with an 11-0 win in the second game.

FLC started the game with a 3-0 lead after two innings and scored four runs in the fourth and the fifth to end the game early. Rodman, senior Briana Jorgensen, junior Skyler Dietz and junior Sienna Mullin each had two hits. Jorgensen and junior Cali Niccum each had home runs.

Redshirt junior Hailie Mann pitched for FLC and allowed six hits while throwing six strikeouts.

NMH was on the right side of a blowout, beating the Skyhawks 8-0 to start Sunday despite only outhitting FLC 11-9. The Cowgirls led 3-0 after two innings and led 5-0 after five before scoring three runs in the sixth.

Dietz and Milliman led FLC with two hits each. Freshman Addison Gavigan pitched four innings for FLC, allowing six hits and five runs and throwing three strikeouts. Freshman Brooke Walton also pitched an inning, giving up five hits, three runs and throwing a strikeout.

FLC ended the series with a win, beating NMH 5-3 on Sunday. The Skyhawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings, before the Cowgirls outscored them 3-1 the rest of the way.

Milliman led the Skyhawks with two hits while freshman Chloe Padilla had a home run. Padilla also pitched for the Skyhawks, allowing five hits, three runs and throwing 10 strikeouts.

The Skyhawks will return home to play a four-game series against Colorado Mesa on Saturday and Sunday.

Women’s lacrosse drops road game at Colorado Mesa

The Skyhawks women’s lacrosse team’s struggles continued on the road at Colorado Mesa on Sunday, losing 17-6.

FLC dropped to 1-10 overall and 0-5 in the RMAC after its sixth consecutive loss. The Skyhawks have lost all five of their conference games by at least 11 goals.

Colorado Mesa improved to 6-4 overall and 5-0 in the RMAC.

The Skyhawks kept it close in the first quarter, trailing 6-4. But the Mavericks scored five unanswered in the second to lead 11-4 at halftime. Colorado Mesa then outscored FLC 6-2 in the second half.

Freshman midfielder Jasmine Nguyen led the Skyhawks with four goals. FLC freshman goalkeeper Abigail Leighty finished with 11 saves and 11 goals allowed while senior Caley Lay allowed six goals with zero saves.

FLC plays at Regis on Friday at 6 p.m.
