The Skyhawks women’s lacrosse and softball teams haven’t had a lot of positives so far this season. Both are near or at the bottom of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and both lost this weekend on the road.
First up for Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse was Division II’s No. 16 ranked team, Regis. The Rangers won 19-3 at home for their second win over the Skyhawks this season.
FLC fell to 1-11 overall and 0-6 in the RMAC. The Skyhawks were outshot 38-14, lost the turnover battle 23-16 and lost the draw control battle 18-8.
Sophomore attack Piper Price led the Skyhawks with two goals and senior attack Phoebe Ramirez had a goal. Senior goalkeeper Caley Lay finished with three saves and eight goals allowed, while sophomore Olivia Tilbury finished with seven saves and 11 goals allowed.
Regis improved to 7-4 overall and 5-1 in the RMAC. Megan Bunker and Lauren Sheets each had hat tricks; Brigit Goetsch finished with six saves in the win.
The Rangers got out to an 8-1 lead after the first quarter and led 11-2 at halftime. They increased that lead to 15-2 after three quarters.
A positive for the Skyhawks women’s lacrosse program was their 12 goals on Sunday at UCCS. The problem was that FLC allowed 23 goals in another double-digit loss.
FLC dropped to 1-12 overall and 0-7 in the RMAC. It was the Skyhawks’ eighth consecutive loss. All of FLC’s RMAC losses have come by at least 11 goals.
Freshman midfielder Jasmine Nguyen and Price each finished with four goals for FLC. Lay finished with eight saves and 15 goals allowed. Freshman Abigail Leighty finished with three saves and eight goals allowed.
UCCS improved to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the RMAC. Sarah Urbanic led the Mountain Lions with five goals and Emma Grace Martin had four. Jordyn Nunez allowed seven goals and had four saves as the top UCCS goalkeeper.
The first quarter ended in a 4-4 tie before UCCS jumped to an 11-5 lead at half. The Mountain Lions increased that lead to 18-9 after three quarters.
FLC plays at home on Saturday against CSU Pueblo at 1 p.m.
Softball drops series at Colorado Mesa
The Skyhawks softball program had a tough weekend in Grand Junction, losing all four games to Colorado Mesa with only one close finish.
FLC fell to 8-28 overall and 7-24 in the RMAC. Colorado Mesa improved to 29-9 overall and 27-5 in the RMAC.
The closest game between the two teams was the first one on Sunday. The Mavericks beat the Skyhawks 3-2.
FLC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning but the Mavericks responded with three runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Myah Arrieta hit a three-run homer to put the Mavericks up. Colorado Mesa outhit FLC 9-7.
Senior Faith Sgro led FLC with two hits. Redshirt junior pitcher Hailie Mann finished with six strikeouts for the Skyhawks while allowing nine hits and three runs.
The second game on Sunday wasn’t as close, with Colorado Mesa winning 9-1 in five innings. The Mavericks jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings before FLC scored in the bottom of the fourth. Colorado Mesa finished the game with two runs in the fifth.

Fockler led the Skyhawks with two hits. Freshman Chloe Padilla pitched for FLC, finishing with two strikeouts; she allowed 12 hits and eight runs.
The score of the final game of the series was the most misleading, with FLC losing 14-2. The Skyhawks actually led 2-1 after four innings but the Mavericks exploded for 13 runs in the last two innings.
Jorgensen and junior Skyler Dietz had two hits each for FLC. Mann pitched five innings, allowing seven runs and seven hits while throwing four strikeouts. Freshman Brooke Walton pitched an inning and allowed six hits, seven runs and had two strikeouts.
