FLC Roundup: Ray earns all-conference honors

Ray places fourth in 10K

The Fort Lewis College men’s and women's outdoor track teams got off to a promising start at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships on Friday in Nebraska, earning one All-Conference finish and sending a pair of athletes to event finals in the 1,500 meters.

Junior Brandy Ray entered the 10,000-meter race seeded sixth in the field, but quickly established herself within the lead pack and held on for a fourth-place finish in 37:38.74.

The podium finish for Ray earns her Second Team All-Conference honors – the first All-Conference recognition in program history for the Skyhawks.

Brady Burrough and Katie Fankhouser, meanwhile, advanced to finals in the 1,500.

Lacrosse falls to Regis

After a hot start for the FLC women’s lacrosse team, No. 7 Regis University scored 12 unanswered goals to run away with a 19-5 win on their home turf on Friday.

FLC fell to 3-9 overall and 3-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Regis improved to 15-1, 9-1 and secure home-field advantage for the conference tournament.

The Skyhawks were outshot 40-11, including a 31-9 difference in shots on goal.

Juniors Haley Dostie and Ellie Martinez each scored two goals and came away with four draw controls in the effort while junior Nina Polk added the team’s fifth goal. Sophomore Diamond Velasco and freshman Zoi Delgado had one assist apiece.

FLC was also scheduled to play the University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Saturday in regular-season finale.

Softball falls to No. 9 CCU

After snapping perfection away in game one on Friday against Colorado Christian University, the FLC softball team nearly did what just few teams have done before. After pushing game two into extra innings, however, the Skyhawks ultimately came up short after nine innings. The No. 9 ranked Cougars won Friday’s game 3-0 and 5-4.

Sloan Shotton homered in the loss. Cara Daugherty tripled in two runs and later scored to give FLC a lead, but CCU was able to tie the game in the seventh inning.

The two teams were also scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday.

FLC was 23-24, 21-19 after Friday’s games while CCU improved to 50-4, 40-2.
