FLC routs Mustangs

Skyhawks shoot well for an RMAC sweep through New Mexico

Fort Lewis College turned a seven-point game at the half into a rout.

FLC, which led 46-39 at halftime, beat Western New Mexico 88-64 on Saturday night in Silver City, N.M., to complete its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s basketball sweep through New Mexico.

FLC shot 48 percent from the floor (32-of-67), 50 percent from 3 (13-of-26) and 79 percent from the free throw line (11-of-14).

Nick Tomsick led the Skyhawks with 21 points.

Alex Herrera, Wes McKenzie and Will Morse each scored 15 for FLC.

“We played really well the second half,” FLC head coach Bob Hofman said. “Will Morse and Wes McKenzie both played well. ... And then Nick scored really well. They really were intent on not letting Alex score, and he was still 5-of-10 from the floor.”

Brelan Berry, who had 18 at the half, scored a game-high 27 points in the Mustangs’ loss.

Marcos Castrillo had 12 points, and Terrez Scott had 13 assists.

“We played better defensively in the second half (Saturday),” Hofman said. “We didn’t really play as together defensively as we needed to in the first half. I thought in the second half, we did a much better job.”

FLC outrebounded Western N.M. 40-33.

Western N.M. had 13 turnovers to the Skyhawks’ eight.

FLC, which has won five in a row, led from start to finish and led by as many as 28 points.

FLC (10-3, 7-2 RMAC) will host Regis and Metro State next weekend at Whalen Gymnasium.

“Hopefully we keep getting better. Big time weekend coming up with Regis and Metro,” Hofman said.
