FLC shines on offense and defense against Adams State

FLC lacrosse beats Grizzlies 17-1

Scoring early and often, the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team snagged a 17-1 road win over Adams State University on Tuesday.

Haley Dostie got the Skyhawks on the board first, sliding a shot from the left wing past the keeper. Mikki Brown and Caprietta Abbadessa chipped in goals in the following sequence to make it 3-0 with 10 minutes to play in the first quarter.

The team built on the dominating start, tallying an additional five goals to take an 8-0 lead into the second quarter.

Rebecca Kiyokawa got the second quarter going with a goal at the 10-minute mark, her first of the game to go along with a first-quarter assist. Fort Lewis reached double-figures at the 9:40 mark and added the 11th of the game courtesy of Alyssa Strough on a man-up opportunity. Liv Crawford capped off the quarter with a goal from in the circle, pushing the lead to 12-0 heading into the break. The Skyhawks outshot the Grizzlies 21-0 in the half.

The third quarter’s vibe differed with just two goals scored. Ellie Martinez scored the Skyhawks goal on a free position play with 6:09 on the clock. Adams State then picked up its only goal of the day three minutes later on a free position shot of its own.

Fort Lewis got back on the scoring train in the final quarter, getting goals from Dostie and Phoebe Ramirez to make it 15-1 with 11:30 remaining. Dostie notched her fourth goal of the day with five minutes to play, making it a 17-1.

Fort Lewis’ defense held the Grizzlies without a shot the rest of the game to run the clock out on a 17-1 win.

The Skyhawks outshot the Grizzles at a 35-1 clip, including a 29-1 edge in shots on goal. Fort Lewis also had eight assists, caused nine Adams State turnovers and committed just 11 turnovers compared with 24 for the Grizzlies.

Fort Lewis (3-5, 3-1 RMAC) will next host UCCS (5-4, 2-2 RMAC) at 1 p.m. Friday.
