Fort Lewis College isn’t exactly where it wants to be, but that’s OK.
The FLC women’s soccer team, which received top-25 consideration for this week’s national rankings, earned another clean sheet and its second one-goal victory in three games this season.
FLC (3-0) defeated Angelo State 1-0 in double overtime Friday in San Angelo, Texas, on a penalty kick of all things.
Skyhawks’ head coach Damian Clarke – or his players, for that matter – can’t remember the last time they’ve had a penalty kick.
“Four years?” said Clarke, who couldn’t remember.
Sam Weiss took the kick, and she remembered how it was done, too.
“Left of the keeper, side netting,” Clarke said of the golden goal. “The keeper had no chance at the save.”
FLC earned the PK simply by “putting it in front of the box,” Clarke said. “There was a scrum in front of the net, a bounding ball, and honestly I think they got two pairs of hands on it; they called the second one.”
“It was just us being greedy,” he said.
The win is the third against a Texas school this year.
“It was a tough soccer game – one that we won again,” Clarke said. “Honestly, I’m happy we’re grinding. We’re not where we want to be, but we’re grinding to win games.”
