The Fort Lewis College softball team was swept by a pair of teams from Washington state on Friday at a Dixie State Softball Courtyard Classic tournament doubleheader on Friday in St. George, Utah.
The Skyhawks (3-4) got off to a rough start in the morning game against Central Washington, as they gave up three runs in the bottom of the first inning and would go on to lose 8-5.
FLC would respond by scoring four in the fourth to briefly take a 4-3 lead. Kaitlyn Barlow and Allison Young had back-to-back singles that drove in two runs, and gave FLC its first and only lead of the game.
In the bottom half of the fourth, the Wildcats (5-2) added three of their own as Theresa Moyle delivered her second hit of the day and gave CWU the lead for good with a two-run single up the middle. The Wildcats added another three runs for good measure.
In the bottom of the seventh, Angelique Elemen hit her third home run of the tournament, which tied the all-time FLC record for career RBIs.
In the second game against Western Washington (4-2), Elemen started the game the same way she ended the first, with a home run. The solo shot gave her her second program record in as many days, as she reached 148 career RBIs for the Skyhawks. That was one of the few bright spots for Fort Lewis, as the team was limited to six hits and stranded five on base as the bats were unable to come to life.
The Vikings answered Elemen’s home run with a 3-run home run of their own by Jackie Lucido, who gave WWU a 3-1 lead and they never looked back. The Vikings would go on to add three in the third with back-to-back doubles, and got one more in the seventh.
Fort Lewis will end the Courtyard Classic against Northwest Nazarene at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Dixie State.
