Hot bats and fundamentally sound defense gave the Fort Lewis College softball team two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road wins.
The Skyhawks defeated Black Hills State 10-2 and 15-9 on Sunday in Spearfish, S.D.
FLC (9-11, 5-5 RMAC) drew 10 walks in the first game and picked up five hits.
“That’s huge. A walk is just as good as a base hit,” FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said. “We picked our pitches and pretty much cruised through that game.”
Victoria Johnson pitched all six innings to earn the victory.
The second victory didn’t come as easily for the Skyhawks.
FLC trailed 5-0 in the third inning before storming back for a 15-9 win.
“It was nice to see our team not press when they did get a few runs at the beginning of the game,” Zeiter said. “We just continued to play solid softball and hit the ball.”
The Skyhawks knocked in 23 hits in the game.
Adriana Rosthenhausler went 5-for-6 while Chelsea Rodriguez picked up three hits, including a home run to extend her FLC career record.
Katie Watkins relieved Kiley Raica to earn the victory in the circle.
Most importantly for FLC was that the Skyhawks didn’t commit an error on the day.
FLC plays Black Hills State in two more games starting at 11 a.m. Monday in Spearfish.
“I want to make sure we continue to keep the bats hot, especially after that second game,” Zeiter said. “We also want to keep playing strong defense behind our pitchers.”
