FLC volleyball rallies for win No. 1

Skyhawks erase an 0-2 deficit to win at N.M. Highlands

This time, the Skyhawks were on the right side of a 3-2 victory. And it got them win No. 1.

The Fort Lewis College volleyball team rallied from an 0-2 hole to win the last three sets in a 3-2 win over New Mexico Highlands for its first win of the season Saturday in Las Vegas, N.M.

Early on, it looked like another sour night for FLC (1-9, 1-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference). The Cowgirls took the first two sets 25-21 and 25-19. But the Skyhawks responded, taking the third set 25-16 before holding off Highlands 25-21 and 15-11 to secure the first victory in the first year of head coach Kelley Rifilato.

FLC, which had its problems with attack percentage in Friday’s loss at CSU-Pueblo, bounced back nicely Saturday, racking up a .323 percentage in the third set and an impressive .474 (10 kills, one error) in the deciding set.

Ashley Wells led FLC with 25 kills and added 15 digs, while Jenna Kinzer chipped in 24 digs and Heather Danny 46 assists against just one error. Danny also had 10 digs.

Madi Bickle had 10 kills, and Kristin Stephan had nine for the Skyhawks.

FLC will play Colorado Mesa at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Grand Junction.
