The Skyhawks are all lined up and ready to go for Collegiate Road Nationals.
The Fort Lewis College cycling team will take 12 riders – seven men and five women – to the Collegiate Road Nationals in Ogden, Utah. The event will begin Friday and will run through Sunday.
On the women’s side, Leila Carrillo, Lauren Catlin, Ivie Crawford, Sofia Gomez Villafane and Nathalie Krantz got the call. The men making the trip are Trevor Brooks, Aaron Canale, Griffin Easter, Howard Grotts, Dean Haas, Renan Maia and Payson McElveen.
“All us coach types have had to think hard and make some difficult decisions to choose the team that’ll represent FLC,” Skyhawks’ cycling director Dave Hagen said in an e-mail to The Durango Herald.
The Skyhawks are 18-time national champions across multiple cycling disciplines, but the road national championship has proved the most elusive piece of hardware for them to grab. The Skyhawks never have claimed the national championship in road.
Last year, FLC finished third at road nationals behind eventual national champion Marian and runner-up Colorado. The Skyhawks’ most recent national title came in October when they claimed their eighth consecutive championship in mountain biking.
