The Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team wrapped up its season-opening weekend with a 65-47 loss to Western New Mexico University on Saturday. The team lost its opener on Friday, 77-52, against Eastern New Mexico.

Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson led FLC on Saturday and picked up her first career double-double with 11 rebounds and 17 points.

“Kelsey is a big part of what we do here,” said head coach Taylor Harris. “She is a tough player and was really aggressive.”

Sorenson and senior Sydney Candelaria each picked up 17 points to lead the team. Senior Alyssa Adams followed with seven points and six rebounds. Sorenson’s 11 rebounds paced the team.

Against Eastern New Mexico, the Skyhawks shot 26.2% (16-of-61) from the field and 32.1% (9-of-28) from three. The Greyhounds shot 46.7% (28-of-60) from the field and 47.4% (9-of-19) from beyond the arc.

Candelaria paced FLC with 17 points, including 12 in the second half, to go along with four assists. Sorenson added 10 points and a team-best six rebounds.

FLC will hit the road again Wednesday to take on Western Colorado University. The Skyhawks will then play its first home game at 1 p.m. Sunday against Northern New Mexico.
