Six more Skyhawks are on the way for Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse.
Head coach Kelsey MacDonald added Lauren Appenzeller, Brooke Galle, Allyson Guererro, Tymbree Hawkins, Francesca Malabad and Rebecca Salamon this week for the 2015 lacrosse season.
Hawkins is the most well-known of the bunch locally, as she’ll be a senior for Durango High School this spring. The 5-7 midfielder has started for DHS for three years and was an All-Western Slope first-team selection as a junior after scoring 21 goals and adding 12 assists for the 7-7 Demons.
“We have been watching her play at Durango High School for the past three years, and she has really developed into a solid lacrosse player,” MacDonald said in a news release.
Appenzeller, who attends Monarch High School, has been a two-year starter at Centaurus High School because Monarch does not offer girls lacrosse, spending time both at defense and in the midfield. She’s helped Centaurus to the state semifinals the last two seasons.
Galle is a three-year starter for Lakeville South High School in Lakeville, Minn., where she was an all-state nominee last year and was an all-conference honorable mention as a sophomore and junior. She had 32 goals and nine assists last season, and she ranked fourth in the state with 75 ground balls.
Guerrero is a two-year starter at goalie for Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins, where she earned all-academic and first-team all-conference honors as a junior. She’s a three-year lacrosse letterwinner and a four-year letterwinner in music.
Malabad will come to Durango after starting for four years at Olympia High School in New Albany, Ohio. The defender was picked as team most valuable player as a junior and was an All-Metro first-team selection.
Salamon is a three-sport athlete at Parkway West High School in Chesterfield, Mo., just outside of St. Louis. The swimmer and cross country runner is a three-year starter at attack and midfield in lacrosse, a sport in which she’s earned first-team all-conference and second-team all-state honors along with multiple academic accolades.
While these players won’t be around until 2015, the 2014 Skyhawks open their season at 3 p.m. Feb. 8 against Midland University in Grand Junction.
