Flood advisory issued for Los Pinos River

Warning remains in effect through Thursday
A flood advisory was issued on the Los Pinos River through Thursday afternoon by the National Weather Service. The river in Ignacio was at 5.73 feet and flowing at 1,530 cubic feet per second at 11:45 a.m. Sunday.

A flood advisory for Los Pinos River in Southeastern La Plata County is in effect through 1:15 p.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service issued the flood advisory just after 11 a.m. Sunday, reporting runoff above the dam at Vallecito Reservoir is occurring as elevated summer temperatures are accelerating the abnormally high late June snowpack in Southwest Colorado.

“The river is bank to bank,” said Los Pinos Fire Protection District Capt. Jim Owens.

Owens said he had not heard of low-lying flooding as of 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Los Pinos River near Ignacio was at 5.73 feet and flowing at 1,530 cubic feet per second at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, according to the U.S Geological Survey National Water Information System.

“The river’s full, just like the Florida and the Animas,” Owens said.

The National Weather service reports elevated releases below Vallecito Dam will be necessary to release some of the incoming runoff to Vallecito Reservoir.

Elevated warm temperatures through the week and possible rainfall will keep runoff high, according to the weather service.

The weather service flood advisory reported creeks, streams and rivers are expected to rise throughout the San Juan Mountains with minor flooding along banks and in low-lying areas possible.

The National Weather Service reports a high of 86 on Sunday in Ignacio with a 40% chance of rain. Highs in Ignacio are expected to remain in the upper 80s through the week.
