Flood warning issued for Mancos River

High runoff cause waterways to swell
The National Weather Service on Monday issued a flood advisory for the Mancos River until Thursday because of increasing snow melt in the San Juan Mountains.

The National Weather Service on Monday issued a flood advisory for the Mancos River until Thursday evening because of increasing snowmelt in the San Juan Mountains.

Warm weather in Southwest Colorado will continue to increase runoff, the weather service said, and river flows will remain at or slightly above the top of the river bank through the week.

Minor flooding is possible in lowland sections of the river.

At 7 a.m. Monday, the river was flowing 5.3 feet deep, the weather service said. Bank full stage is 5 feet, and flood stage is 6 feet.

Monday in Dolores, the Dolores River was running at 3,000 cubic feet per second – about 175 percent higher than the 107-year average – and about 6 feet high at the gauge. Flood stage is considered about 8 feet.
