Fluoride hasn’t proved harmful

I grew up in Dallas. When I was 5 and 6 years old, I would have four to five cavities in my teeth whenever my mother took me to the dentist. On one visit to the dentist, he asked my mother, “Would you mind if I treated your son’s teeth with a solution of fluoride?” The dentist told us that the children in West Texas, where fluoride was very prominent in the water naturally, had very little tooth decay. She told the dentist to proceed. I’m now 83 years old and I’ve had maybe three cavities since 1948.

As far as the effect on IQ, I don’t think it affected me. I have a degree in Nuclear Engineering from Notre Dame and a master’s degree from Cornell University.

I think the people in the article, “Some residents want an end to Durango’s fluoridation of drinking water” (Herald, Nov. 10), are uninformed and misguided.
