Flurry of DUI’s Sunday morning keep police officers busy

5 incidents about 2:30

Durango Police Department officers responded to five separate driving-under-the-influence calls Sunday morning, all occurring at about 2:30 a.m.

Details are still emerging as officials complete reports, but at least three of DUI arrests were made as results of accidents, and two of those were seriously dangerous.

Sgt. Jeremiah Lee with the Durango Police Department said officers where going in every direction in response to the drunken drivers. Lee described one drunken driver’s vehicle on South Camino del Rio, near what is known as the High Bridge, as crossing both directions of travel and bouncing from side to side off both guardrails.

“He was basically like a pingpong ball,” he said. “It was a pretty significant DUI crash.”

No one else was involved in the crash, and the driver was not injured; but the vehicle was so badly damaged he was stuck inside the car.

“There was so much damage; it just crushed the doors in,” Lee said.

Another crash occurred when a drunken driver drove into a house on or near Clovis Drive, off Junction Street.

“It was kind of an unusual night,” Lee said. “They were literally all going on at the same time. We had officers completely locked up on all of those DUI crashes.”

Lee said he didn’t believe that any of the incidents were related, calling the inebriated drivers “a diverse group.” Lee said with Halloween week approaching, many people will be imbibing, perhaps excessively.

“There are going to be a lot of Halloween parties, and people should just be careful,” he said.
