Forest Service to discuss spruce beetles at Vallecito

The Columbine Ranger District invites the public to a discussion of the spruce beetle and the San Juan National Forest from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, at the Vallecito Community Center, 17252 County Road 501.

Tom Eager, U.S Forest Service insect and disease expert, will explain the biology of the beetle, how it spreads, and current local conditions. San Juan foresters and other specialists will discuss potential vegetation treatments to respond to this widespread natural event currently occurring in upper-elevation spruce-fir forests.

Members of the public will be able to ask questions and share their concerns at the meeting. The Forest Service will also discuss how the beetle infestation may affect the agency's ability to keep trails clear, or pose other potential impacts to forest users.
