Hillcrest Golf Club will open its course on a limited basis beginning Friday, head professional John Vickers said.
Also, the driving range will open from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday. On Friday, the golf shop will open at 10 a.m., and tee times begin at 10:30 a.m. The course and range also will be open Saturday and Sunday with tee times starting at 10:30 a.m.
Vickers said a similar schedule likely will be used until mid-March, but conditions will be evaluated on a weekly basis.
After discussion Tuesday night, the Hillcrest board of directors decided that although the course is dry from a lack of winter moisture, the public is ready to play, and it’s time to get the season underway.
“We’re really concerned about the condition of the course and how dry it’s been,” Vickers said.
Unlike most years, the golf course was never groomed this winter for cross country skiing. Some ski seasons last two months or longer. It would now take a huge snowstorm for skiing to take place this year, Vickers said.
Piñon Hills Golf Course in Farmington, Riverview Golf Course in Kirtland, N.M., and Hidden Valley Golf Course in Aztec all attempt to remain open year-round and are open now.
