Longtime Durango Trails executive director steps down after 19 years

Durango Trails has named Jen Gersbach-Venzara as its new executive director.

The longtime Durango resident will succeed Mary Monroe Brown, who announced her resignation in August. Gersbach-Venzara has been involved with the organization for several decades.

“I moved to Durango because of the trails. My unwavering commitment, enthusiasm, and strong desire to build upon the remarkable achievements that Mary and the entire Durango Trails organization have provided our community are exactly why I’m thrilled to step into this role,” Gersbach-Venzara said in a news release.

Attempts to reach the new executive director were unsuccessful Thursday.

Gersbach-Venzara, is a graduate of University of Colorado-Boulder and former professional mountain biker. She was chosen because of her background in trail development, coaching and health care, according to the news release from the organization.

During her time in Durango, she has coached for DEVO and the Fort Lewis College Cycling team while working as a nurse.

She will take over from Brown, who has led Durango Trails for nearly 20 years. Brown plans to step down at the end of 2024 to focus on her outdoor recreation consulting firm, Bluebird Consulting, but Brown will stay on through the year to help ensure a smooth leadership transition.

“I’ve known Jen for 20 years, and I’m thrilled to see her passion, excitement and new ideas come to fruition,” Brown said. “Jen’s commitment to our community and her dedication to raising her family here bring both continuity and fresh vision to help elevate our mission.”

During her tenure, Brown has led initiatives that have expanded and enhanced Durango’s trail network, while promoting community engagement and environmental stewardship.

Under Brown’s leadership, the nonprofit experienced significant growth, including the development of 50 miles of new trails and the expansion of its team.

Durango Trails now employs six full-time staff members and two interns. Additionally, Brown has successfully recruited 400 to 600 volunteers each year to work on trail projects from April through November, something the organization hopes Gersbach-Venzara can build upon.

Under Brown, the organization rebranded as Durango Trails in 2020 to mark its 30th anniversary. The nonprofit has helped develop notable trails such as Horse Gulch Trail, Overend Mountain Park, Animas Mountain Trail and many others.

“Mary’s impact on our community is immeasurable,” said Steve Schwartz, board member and interim president of Fort Lewis College. “Her passion, vision and dedication have set a standard of excellence that will continue to inspire us for years to come. We are profoundly grateful for her leadership and the legacy she leaves behind.”

Gersbach-Venzara will officially begin her role on Dec. 1.
