Since 2001, former Durango teacher and longtime community member Janice Moore has worked to educate local seniors about Medicare tips and tricks to make sure people get what they need when they turn 65. She continues to provide the service free, despite people’s attempts to give her money.
Moore, now 75, has lived in Durango since she was 13. She and her husband, Loyd Moore, graduated from school and moved from the area, to return after 15 years. They worked as professionals for 20 years; she was a teacher and he sold insurance for a living, and they bought Durango CoWest Insurance, in Durango, which they still own.
When retirement was upon them, she felt a need to learn everything about turning 65 and focused on being prepared for her later years by becoming an expert on Medicare coverage. Her daughter, Terrie Anstead, took over her husband’s responsibilities at the insurance company, and she started to offer free Medicare education to Durango seniors in 2001. Since then, Moore has helped people understand Medicare by teaching them how to get the optimum benefit for their situation at the lowest possible cost. People become eligible for Medicare coverage on the first day of the month that they turn 65, and she can educate them before it’s time to get insured, for free.
“Even when I’ve told them that it doesn’t cost anything and I don’t want their money, people still want to pay,” said Moore.
