Fort Lewis and Adams State women’s soccer teams play to draw

110 minutes end with 1-1 tie

The Fort Lewis women’s soccer team jumped out to an early lead in Sunday’s match against Adams State, but couldn’t hang on.

Courtney Riley’s goal in the 22nd minute got the day started on a good note for FLC, but the offense couldn’t convert again. Unfortunately for the home crowd, Adams State (7-6-1, 4-5-1 RMAC) was able to match the tally with one of its own late in the second half, and the match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Riley’s second goal of the year came after Carolyn Archer’s blast was turned away by the Grizzlies’ goalkeeper. The FLC senior was in the right place at the right time and gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.

The lead was held by FLC’s tight defense until the 68th minute, when Adams State’s Elizabeth Anderson tied it up as a corner kick created a scramble in front of Fort Lewis goalkeeper Kaylee Mickens that led to the equalizer off Anderson’s foot.

Mickens made two saves in the draw and played all 110 minutes in net.

The Skyhawks (6-6-2, 5-4-1 RMAC) finished the match with a 20-13 advanatage in shots and a 6-3 edge in shots on frame. Archer and Renee Terrell each had four shots to lead the Skyhawks.

Next up for Fort Lewis is a 3 p.m. match Friday at Dirks Field against Colorado Mines. At 1:30 p.m. Sunday, the Skyhawks will wrap up the regular season hosting Colorado Christian.
